I think, based on the famous movie, “Back to the Future”, we’ve had a lot of expectations for the future of our society. We’d thought that at least we would already have flying cars by the year 2020, right? Well, sadly, we have not found out how to come up with functioning flying cars. However, society is slowly moving forward and we’ve had a lot of new things already. Although, I wouldn’t call our society futuristic just yet. We have a long way to go.
But isn’t it bizarre how people saw what the future would look like and the present we live in? Even further before “Back to the Future”, people in the past used to illustrate how they think the future would look like. Some of them, oddly enough, very accurately describe what we use on a daily basis now. A few of them are described in a lot of detail and a few of them have become a reality now, maybe with a few differences but otherwise, pretty spot-on. Here are a few predictions from people in the past of how the future would look like:
Instant Messaging Using A Pen And Digital Pad
The picture above shows how the people in the past imagined, what we call texting nowadays, would be like in the future. They imagined that we would use a pen, write in cursive and it would appear as normal text on the screen. Some smartphones that we use nowadays are like that, where we just scribble the word and it would appear as a normal text. However, for most people in the 21st century, we prefer to just text normally on our touch-screen phones. They illustrated that we would have to write for the normal text to appear but on our screens now is just a somewhat mini keyboard and we type in the words like normal. No cursive or handwriting needed.
Cities Of The Future
Now, this is an illustration of how our cities would look in the future to people in the past. We would have futuristic buildings made of metal or similar material and we’d have flying cars or hovering cars. However, we still only have buildings made of concrete and or bricks as well as normal cars that are still required to be driven on a road. It’s interesting to see how people imagined our society would be like but I feel like we have a long way to go before achieving this kind of civilization. Maybe in the future, you could even have an easier time to find a property for you to buy like with Edgeprop.
Amphibious, Autonomous, Flying And Personal Vehicles
There are four parts of the picture above. First, is the amphibious vehicle. Now, amphibious in this context is not frog-like. It simply means a vehicle that can operate over water. Well, I’m pretty sure that exists as boats now. But I think the idea was more of a way to travel on the water easier than with a boat. Secondly, is the autonomous vehicle. This would mean that we would not even have to drive the car. We could just get in, start the engine and relax. We do have cars similar to that idea now, with Elon Musk’s Tesla Model X. It can be put on autopilot but you’d still have to watch where you’re going. In the picture, it shows a family just relaxing and enjoying beverages as the vehicle moves on its own. The other one is the typical image of the future, flying vehicles. We do have aeroplanes but it isn’t the same as being able to bring your own flying car. Maybe Jams would be fully gone by then too. Okay so, the last one is personal vehicles. Personally, I feel like this is a nightmare for people with claustrophobia. It’d just be a space where we’d have to stand and steer the vehicle. I figured it’d be a bit tiring for people to just keep on standing isn’t it? I feel like this one wasn’t thought through well enough but it was a good idea.
This one was pretty spot-on actually. We don’t necessarily have a whole food delivery truck but we have food-trucks. Plus, we have a lot of food-delivery companies that operate to bring you your food anytime at any day now. In the picture, I feel like the concept is more of a food truck rather than a food delivery truck. But that looks certainly very similar to a food truck.
The Robot Kitchen
The idea of a robot kitchen has been around until today. Maybe, in the past, they figured we would have robots helping us every step of the way. With our house chores and simple tasks. I personally think that having robots to help us with every single thing would increase productivity but it could also cause a whole lot of laziness. But, we do have a robotic kitchen by Moley in production. It’s a pair of robotic hands to help you out with your meals and the cleanup afterwards.
Our world may not be filled with robots and automatic everything but I feel like everything is slowly moving forward. May it be slow but at least we’re moving, and that is what’s important.
